I was the Producer/Director at Smoky Hills PBS from 2017 to 2022. I created much of the interstitial material and worked on all live shows and sporting events. I handled all motion graphics and sourced voice-over talent for our pool. On productions, I did everything from pulling cables and setting up cameras to testing equipment, handling graphics and audio, and pretty much anything else that needed to be done to make the production a success. The main show I worked on was Real Ag.

Real Ag

I was the lead (actually the only producer) on the show Real Ag.

Producing, directing, researching, interviewing, creating graphics, editing audio, color correction, etc., etc., etc. Anything and everything for this show that is done on the production end was done by me.

The show was mainly produced in the summer, and the premiere episodes started the first week of November and then aired Fridays at 8:30 pm every week until the end of the year.

Real Ag (2021 Season)

Corn, soybeans, cover crops, government policy, and much more were covered in the 2021 season of Real Ag. I traveled all over the great state of Kansas to interview farmers and agricultural specialists to get as much information on each topic as I could.

Mildred S. Janzen D.A.R. Award

World War II Survivor, mother, grandmother, and truly resilient woman. All these things describe Mildred Schindler Janzen, but they could never encapsulate everything she has been through in her lifetime. After escaping Nazi Germany and managing to get out of communist Russia, Mildred made it back to her homeland of America and made a wonderful life for herself.

The Daughters of the American Revolution found it fitting to present Mildred with the D.A.R. medal of honor for all she had been through.

Doctors on Call

Featuring Kansas doctors and health care professionals talking about health-related topics. Doctors on Call was a live call-in show that aired every Tuesday at 7 pm. The regular season ran from January through April.

I helped set up the set, cameras, and lighting for the show, ran the graphics, communicated with callers to the host, and patched calls in during the show. I was also responsible for preparing the encore airings of the show for replays later in the week and during the off-season.

The Kansas Legislature

Beginning in February, the Kansas Legislature hosted local Kansas Senators and Representatives to discuss state issues during the legislative session. The Kansas Legislature was a live call-in program.

Similar to Doctors on Call, I helped set up the set, cameras, and lighting for the show, ran the graphics, communicated with callers to the host, and patched calls in during the show. I was also responsible for preparing the encore airing of the show for replays later in the week.

A Conversation with Bob Davis

Bob Davis, a 14-time Kansas Sportscaster-of-the-Year, released a book chronicling his 48 years calling the games as the voice of the Fort Hays State Tigers, Kansas Jayhawks, and Kansas City Royals. As part of a pledge drive, Smoky Hills PBS interviewed Bob at the old Hays High School gymnasium, where Jeremy McGuire discussed his career in broadcasting, along with the book's author, Jeff Bollig.

Smoky Hills PBS Kid's Club

The Smoky Hills PBS Kids Club was an added benefit for member donors to Smoky Hills PBS. In addition to giving away hundreds of books to schools, the Kids' Club announced the children's birthdays on a spot, with a birthday song sung by Jammin' Randy, on the channel monthly. Kids also got books, stickers, and other items from Smoky Hills PBS.

Candlelight Concert

The 58th Annual Candlelight Concert featuring the Choral Department of the Wichita State University School of Music, featuring the WSU WU Choir, WSU Shocker Choir, WSU Concert Chorale, and the WSU Madrigal Singers. Taped by Smoky Hills PBS on November 30, 2021, from Wiedemann Recital Hall on the campus of Wichita State University.

I ran cameras for this production and set up and tore down equipment.

Max Haverfield Concerts

“Sound of Glory: An American Spectacular! with Max Haverfield & Friends" was a patriotic musical tribute to America. Recorded at the Majestic Theatre in Scott City, Kansas, “Sound of Glory An American Spectacular! With Max Haverfield & Friends” featured music by local singers and musicians celebrating a patriotic tribute to America.

The program was produced by Smoky Hills PBS. I ran the camera, set up, and tore down the equipment for the production.

Family Fun Days

Smoky Hills PBS put on Family Fun Days in various towns across western Kansas. Getting children and families out for afternoon crafts and fun, often with a fun character from our children's shows.

These spots were fun to produce, as that was their main goal. To be fun spots that get families to come out to these events and have a good time, and interact with the staff and characters with Smoky Hills PBS.

The Kansas 8-Man All-Star Games

The 8-Man All-Star Game was played every June in Beloit. It featured the top players from across western Kansas.

This recorded production is often aired a few weeks after the games. I set up, ran audio, ran cameras (if needed), prepared instant replays for the director, as well as tore down any other part of the product that needed my help. I also prepared the DVDs and built the show for the airing and re-airing of the games.

The Wild West Bowl

The Wild West Bowl was the 6-Player Championship game held in Dodge City, Kansas. The Championship and consolation games were played on the same day.

I set up and ran audio and cameras, prepared instant replays for the director, and tore down any other parts of the product that needed my help. I also prepared the DVDs and built the shows for the airings and re-airings of the games.

The Smoky Hills PBS Young Writers & Illustrators Contest was an annual contest for Kindergarten through 3rd graders to write their own creative stories, which were read and presented in a show on Smoky Hills PBS. They were also presented with a trophy at their school by Smoky Hills PBS at the end of the school year.

I arranged the production of this show, usually editing, obtaining voice-over, music, creating graphics, and animations, as well as any other part of production that is needed, along with the help of other Smoky Hills PBS departments, which give me the stories that won and other information needed to produce the show.

Always looking for creative ways to generate revenue for Smoky Hills PBS, business partnerships were another way to enable programming and events at the station.

Under the direction of Kerry J Kuplic, the Concert Choir, Choral Union, and Men's Trio perform numbers such as Ose Shalom, Goodnight, The Ground from Sunrise Mass, Nuit d'étoiles, and more. Nancy Sapp conducts the Instrument Ensemble to three songs, including What Child Is This.

The 34th Annual Cathedral Concert

Summer sports presentations

Often in the summer, Smoky Hills PBS would re-air some of the sports championships and awards show that were produced during the winter. Shows such as the Wild West bowl, the 8-Player State Championships, and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

New Year's Day Sports Marathon Spot

Replaying some of the best games that aired on Smoky Hills PBS in recent years, the New Year's Day sports marathon replayed some of the best football games as well as the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Ceremony.

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

The annual Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was a regular show on Smoky Hills PBS. Every year, the best athletes, coaches, and sports announcers are honored at the ceremony.

The Firebird

Based on Igor Stravinsky’s ballet, this play was adapted for children. The video gave you a behind-the-scenes look at interviews and rehearsals with the conductor, playwright, and local adult and youth actors and dancers as they prepared for this annual event with the Hays Symphony.

One of the first promotional campaigns I worked on for Smoky Hills PBS was the PBS Nerd spots.

Hoping to encourage our audience to become PBS nerds, I went around our viewing area and recorded people talking about and acting like PBS nerds.

Miranda Testimonial

An emotional interview with a close friend of Smoky Hills PBS, the Miranda testimonials told the story of a young lady who had a stroke and found help in recovery from Smoky Hills PBS.
